I’ve become very curious recently about what aging really means. As I observe in my own body, I’ve become healthier and happier as I’ve aged, and my body seems to have responded by being more energetic, capable and my mental capacity has increased at the same time. I’ve really credited my energy work and my involvement in NVC and self-empathy with these improvements, as I’ve witnessed these same changes in my clients who have made commitments to their wellbeing by having regular work with Quantum-Touch therapy and Empathic Listening.
As I’ve been pondering these issues, I’ve discovered the work of several authors, who have made similar conclusions about what happens when we age and what getting older really means and about how we can not only slow down the process, but can actually reverse the symptoms and results of aging, with amazing results. Initially I discovered the work of Ellen Langer who was part of an investigation during which she invited a number of older men to participate in a study that was held at a resort. At the resort all the decorations were from the l970’s. The pictures on the walls, the cars in the lot, clothes worn by the participants during their stay, and the TV shows all reflecting those from 20 years earlier. Subjects were also asked to discuss the issues relevant to that era. During the study, all the subjects began to show signs of de-aged as they lost the pain in their joints and began moving with more ease and flow almost immediately. They demonstrated that being in an environment representative of when they were in their youth, in more or less degrees changed their physical and emotional.
In his book “Ageless Body Timeless Mind” Deepak Chopra states ‘because the mind influences every cell in the body, human aging is fluid and changeable, it can speed up, slow down, stop for a time, and even reverse itself.’ In my work I don’t tell the body that it is de-aging, but I believe that when a client makes the decision to make an appointment with me, they have taken the necessary initial step to let the body know that it is possible to be more well, to eliminate conditions in the body that contribute to aging. In other words to begin the de-aging process. From those first moments when they get off the table and feel the differences in their bodies, even when those differences are very subtle, to the point of being unidentifiable, they know that something has changed. Over and over again I hear the statement, “I don’t know what it is, but I feel different. I still have some pain but it has changed, and my body feels straighter, and more flexible.” As they walk down the hall towards the front door, I can see in their walk increased fluidity and mobility.
Improvement continue with each appointment: better, more efficient sleep, improved brain functioning, and more confidence in their daily activities. Even people who have come to see me for some physical condition, report that they have increased feelings of wellbeing and confidence in the future. Feelings of depression usually disappear.
As in the studies of Langer and Chopra, once the possibility of reversing the aging process is experienced, clients just keep on getting better.
